Circe
Circe is known as the goddess of magic in Greek mythology. When Odysseus and his
companions arrived on her island, she used her magic to transform his men into pigs.
Odysseus, however, remained unharmed, protected by a magical plant called moly.
In mythology, moly is said to have sprung from the blood of a giant slain on Circe’s island.
According to Ovid, moly has a white flower and a black root. There is ongoing debate about
whether moly was a purely mythical invention or based on a real plant. Some suggest it may
have been inspired by the snowdrop or a related herb.
