Persephone
Persephone is the Greek goddess of spring and fertility, and the daughter of Zeus and
Demeter. According to myth, Hades kidnapped her and took her to the underworld to be his
queen. Persephone could only return to the world above if she had not eaten any food from
the underworld. However, Hades offered her a few seeds of a pomegranate, and when she
ate them, she was bound to spend part of each year in the underworld. As a result, the
pomegranate became one of her key symbols.
